Bucharest, 8 June 2018 – Minister of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union (DExEU), Lord Callanan, has paid an official visit to Romania today to comment on the latest stages of the Brexit negotiations.

During his visit, Lord Callanan met Minister Delegate for European Affairs, Victor Negrescu, Leonard Orban, Presidential Advisor for European Affairs, and Victor Ionescu, Under State Secretary at the Ministry for the Diaspora.

Furthermore, Lord Callanan attended the sixth edition of the EUROSFAT conference, in which he further scrutinised and updated the audience upon the latest on Brexit. The forum, co-organised by the British Embassy, envisaged a broad discussion oriented towards the future of Romania, of the European Union and of Romania within the EU. It also brought to the forefront the Brexit debate and its implications, but also Romania’s contribution in relaunching the European project, and the strength of the UK-Romania bilateral relationship.

Lord Callanan spoke at the event, along with Victor Negrescu, Minister Delegate for European Affairs, Charlie Crocker, CEO of the British-Romanian Chamber of Commerce, Lazar Comanescu, from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania and Paul Balogh, a Romanian entrepreneur in the UK.

In his speech, Lord Callanan said:

“We are moving towards a new relationship with the EU, but we want the remaining 27 member states to know that our commitment to shared European values and our close ties in trade and security are undying.

“We hope that our friends across Europe – like Romania – will speak up in favour of the kind of close economic and security partnership that is so fundamentally in our shared interest.

“Britain is the same free-trading, outward-facing country we always have been, and we look forward to further deepening the historic bonds between our two countries long after we have left the EU.”
