Foundation Conservation Carpathia is dedicated to protecting and restoring the natural ecosystems of the Southern Carpathian Mountains in Romania, particularly in the Făgăraș region. Our mission is to create Europe’s largest forest wilderness national park in the Făgăraș Mountains—a complete and self-sustaining ecosystem that benefits both nature and people while helping to mitigate climate change, the “Yellowstone of Europe.”

Our work follows an integrated approach to conservation, built on several key pillars. We focus on forest protection by acquiring forests and alpine meadows and removing them from commercial exploitation, with the goal of including them in strictly protected areas. To date, more than 28,000 hectares have been secured, on which logging, trophy and sport hunting are no longer allowed.

Restoration of degraded habitats is another essential component of our work. We actively rebuild damaged ecosystems by planting over five million trees, stabilising soils, restoring natural processes, and removing invasive species, helping forests return to a healthy, resilient state.

Wildlife conservation and rewilding are central to our vision of a fully functional ecosystem. After centuries of absence, we have reintroduced species such as the European bison and the beaver, and we are currently working towards the reintroduction of the vulture, completing the natural balance of the ecosystem.

A key part of our work is supporting local communities by developing eco-tourism and strengthening nature-based businesses through grants and partnerships. Initiatives such as Junior Ranger, Făgăraș Fest, and the Roadele Munților food hub connect people with nature and create sustainable economic opportunities.

Education and awareness are at the heart of everything we do. Through school programs, workshops, and guided experiences, we inspire the next generation and foster a long-term commitment to protecting the Carpathian wilderness.

Overall, Foundation Conservation Carpathia represents a comprehensive effort to preserve one of Europe’s most valuable natural regions while balancing ecological protection with local communities’ development.
