Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Business Conference

Date:27/03/2023 9:00 am
Location: GRAND HOTEL București, Sala Fortuna

Energy efficiency trends are accelerating in the light of higher energy costs and rising inflation. With several disruptions shaping global energy and economic trends, increased investment, rising government spending on efficiency – in large part related to recovery plans enacted in response to the current energy crisis, new announcements of higher climate ambition and other policy measures offer some encouraging signals.

In the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario issued by the International Energy Agency (IEA), an early policy focus on energy efficiency would triple the number of jobs created by 2030 through increased spending on building retrofits, more efficient appliances, and other measures. This includes many jobs in construction, as well as installation of heating, cooling, and hot water systems. While many of these jobs match existing skill sets, governments can play a role by sponsoring training programmes to help provide wider access to opportunities and avoid skills shortages.

In this context, THE DIPLOMAT BUCHAREST & SUSTAINABILITY TODAY organizes ENERGY EFFICIENCY FOR SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS CONFERENCE on  March 27, 2023, within Grand Hotel Bucharest, Fortuna conference hall.

Building envelope design is critical in defining the service demand for heating and cooling, and to guarantee comfort, indoor environmental quality, and safety. Its structure is also important in determining its embodied carbon impact.

To be in step with the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, all countries need to establish zero-carbon-ready building energy codes for both residential and non-residential buildings by 2030 at the latest, and all new buildings should meet this standard from 2030, according to the IEA. This also requires 20 percent of the existing building floor area to be renovated to this level by 2030, with annual energy efficiency renovation rates jumping from less than one percent today to 2.5 percent by 2030 globally.

11:15- 11:30 Coffee Break

11:30-13:00  PANEL 2: NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY – KEY TO SUCCESS

Solar PV generation increased by a record 179 TWh (up 22 percent) in 2021 to exceed 1 000 TWh. It demonstrated the second largest absolute generation growth of all renewable technologies in 2021, after wind. Solar PV is becoming the lowest-cost option for new electricity generation in most of the world, which is expected to propel investment in the coming years.

However, average annual generation growth of 25 percent in the period 2022-2030 is needed to follow the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario. This corresponds to a more than threefold increase in annual capacity deployment until 2030, requiring much greater policy ambition and more effort from both public and private stakeholders, especially in the areas of grid integration and the mitigation of policy, regulation, and financing challenges. This is particularly the case in emerging and developing countries.

13:00-14:00 Networking lunch
